Crafts in Nicaragua: an opportunity in the face of unemployment and economic obstacles

In a context of development and profitability, crafts in Nicaragua have long been considered ineffective for survival due to their low capital intensity, the use of primitive technologies or their limited production. However, in poor countries with high unemployment rates, these characteristics can be advantageous, as barriers to entry are low, providing a viable complementary option for agriculture and tourism.

The quality of Nicaraguan craftsmanship has improved in recent years, leading European, Canadian and American companies to take an interest in many of our products such as hammocks. As an importer of Latin hammocks, our collaboration is very positive, with punctual deliveries and products arriving in excellent condition, demonstrating the quality of our service.

Cotton hammocks from Masaya: Growth in exports around the world

It should be noted that Nicaraguan hammocks represent the majority of artisanal exports in Nicaragua, as a good number of companies have dedicated themselves to promoting hammocks. Thanks to the internet and social networks, the producers themselves are getting involved in spreading their products and promoting their work in the country and beyond. This “new” promotional work has led to an increase in the network of craft businesses: successful hammock workshops, which employed around 10 people in 1995, now employ 30 people. to 60 workers per workshop. The most exported hammocks are their famous bar hammocks.

We see in the production of hammocks a significant generation of direct and indirect jobs, estimated in the city of Masaya at several thousand people.
