The Chinchorro Wayùu Doble Face Hammocks: A work of textile art

The Wayùu Indians are masters in the ancestral art of weaving, thanks to the mastery of a multitude of techniques. Among their most notable creations are the hammocks, among which the famous "Chinchorro Wayuu Doble Face" stands out. For the Wayùu, weaving a hammock, like the Wayúu4 hammock, means showing life as they feel it through their creativity, intelligence and wisdom.

Wayúu4 hammock: A giant hammock with extra wide weaving

The central part of the Wayùu hammock (hammock body) is woven in double thickness using a weaving technique called "Keiñasü" (chain). All this is done by hand, thread by thread, on a traditional Wayùu vertical loom. This technique results in a very resistant and airy weave. The two side fringes are made with the crochet technique. They bear a sublime traditional Wayùu design called "Kuliitchiyaa", inspired by the shapes observed in the roofs of Wayùu houses in La Guajira. The meaning of "Double Face"

The term "Doble Face", meaning "double face" in French, refers to a particular type of hammock with two distinct sides, each offering a unique aesthetic. This feature, although fascinating, makes the manufacturing of these hammocks exceptionally complex, thus explaining their lengthy production process.

The Chinchorro Wayùu: The most expensive hammock in the world

These types of Wayùu hammocks, called Chinchorro in Venezuela and Colombia, are the most prestigious found today, due to their great workmanship and quality. Very durable and comfortable, it is a rare object for unique decoration and moments of relaxation. Thousands of women from the deserts of La Guajira weave the designs they dream of, making the best hammocks in the world.

The Wayùu community: Guardian of an ancient tradition

Occupying a large territory encompassing part of Colombia and Venezuela, the Wayuu community embodies a way of life marked by freedom of movement. Their ability to cross the borders between Colombia and Venezuela is without a passport, thus testifying to this freedom. Many Colombians admire and respect them for having preserved their way of life as their ancestors did long before Spanish colonization.

Respect for Wayùu craftsmanship: A non-negotiable standard

We never negotiate the price of a Wayúu hammock. This would be a lack of respect for the work carried out and considered an offense to the community. The rarity of these objects and the time spent creating these manufactured pieces (in a single copy) must be appreciated for their artisanal quality before any profit from resale. At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly developing, this way of doing business reminds us all of the importance of recognizing the intrinsic value of artisanal products, impossible to reproduce with machines and those who make them.

The acquisition of Chinchorros Wayùu: An annual challenge

Despite their high cost, Chinchorro Doble Face hammocks are highly sought after and often difficult to obtain due to low production and high demand. Each season, the number of Wayúu hammocks is therefore limited and we must plan our orders well in advance to allow us to secure these precious textiles.

The mystery of the hammock

A study conducted by the University of Geneva in Switzerland, dating from 2011, reveals that the swinging movement of the hammock helps us fall asleep faster and deeper than in a bed. This practice is not new, however, since throughout time, man has rocked his children to put them to sleep. Although we all notice how easily we sleep in a rocking chair or in a car, and despite our knowledge of these effects, no precise neuroscientific explanation has been found to date. This mystery continues to arouse scientific curiosity.
