The Mexican hammock: The origins of the hammock

Hammocks have a long history dating back about a thousand years, although they are not native to Mexico. They are believed to have reached the Yucatan Peninsula at least two centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, but the exact antiquity remains uncertain. The word "hammock" comes from the Taino and means "fishing net".

Net hammock: A weaving “as old as time”

Queen Maya stands out for its excellent weaving technique and is made in the Chiapas region of southern Mexico. This hammock perpetuates an ancestral tradition passed down from generation to generation by four families of artisans. In the past, hammocks were made from the bark of the Hamack tree, then the sisal plant was used with its elastic and soft fibers. Today, these hammocks are woven by hand with a wooden or bone frame and needle, a job that can take up to two weeks. Each design emerges during the craft process. The Maya XXL “Chile” Mexican Hammock: An extra large XXL hammock

The Queen Maya offers a spacious space of 2m20 wide, allowing you to lie down comfortably in length or width. Designed to accommodate two to three people, this hammock has a greater quantity of thread in its fabric, making it even more comfortable and adaptable to different body types.

How to set up a Mexican hammock

The curvature is the key factor for the comfort of a Mexican hammock. It should be well balanced, neither too tight nor too hollow. Divide the length by 2 to get the height. If your hammock is 4m, you can hang it at a height of 2m. The ideal is to have the suspensions inclined at around 30° from the horizontal. This position provides the best comfort while minimizing tension on ropes and bindings. By ensuring that you maintain this curvature, you will fully enjoy your Mexican hammock in complete relaxation.

Made from nylon

A durable material used in fishing nets, Queen Maya can be used outdoors, withstanding extreme climates. However, it is recommended to store it under cover after use to ensure its durability. Nylon offers superior durability to cotton , preventing damage from prolonged exposure to sun and rain. Nylon hammocks are particularly popular in hot regions like southern Mexico, where they are used daily as a bed replacement, providing a cooling solution thanks to their optimal ventilation.

A symbol of union and family in rural Mexican traditions

Regarding the hammock as a place for human reproduction, we would simply like to point out that in some families in rural areas there is a special tradition.
