Hammock Symbolism and Soul Transition

In some indigenous communities, when a person dies, their body is placed in a hammock in the fetal position or lying down, because it symbolizes the uterus or placenta of the earth. The Wayana-Apalai of French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil consider that the soul of the deceased leaves the body and then follows the hammock ties to the roof of the house. The hammock is suspended from two posts or shrubs planted in a pit and the personal objects of the deceased are placed around it. The grave can be dug under a miniature cabin created for this purpose or in the hut of the deceased. The latter is then generally abandoned and sometimes set on fire. Among the Yanomamis, in northern Brazil, the deceased are cremated in their hammocks and then buried.
