Wayúu women are the only weavers of these magnificent hammocks called in Colombia and Venezuela “Chinchorros”. The chinchorro is a hammock with a very tightly woven net. Remarkable weaving quality, and a soft feeling while maintaining great sleeping flexibility. The Wayúu Chinchorros measure 2.20 m wide and 5 m long. The Wayúu artisanal process begins in the heart of the ranches. The women artisans make these pieces of art for a period of 2 to 6 months. Transportation to urban areas remains a major challenge for these tribes living in northern Colombia, in the Guajira Desert. The Wayúus do not sell their hammock to just anyone.
