Maya Mexican Hammock: One of the most traditional and admired hammocks in the world

He was fascinated to see how the natives of the West Indies rested peacefully in these hanging structures. When he returned to Spain, he took with him these very practical hammocks, which quickly became popular among sailors. This is because they took up less space than traditional beds on ships and provided crew members with comfortable and cool rest.

The real XXL Mexican hammock

Our Mexican Maya XXL “Guanajuato” hammock is extra large (2m20 wide by 4m long, who could say better?) and can easily be used to replace your bed to spend the night or sleep under the stars. On hot days, it becomes a great ally thanks to its mesh weave, promoting air circulation and thus avoiding perspiration and the feeling of humidity that one can experience in a bed in hot weather. Threat to traditions

So far, all our customers have been delighted with these exceptional hammocks. We hope to be able to continue to offer you these handcrafted hammocks for as long as possible. Unfortunately, since 2020, Mexicans' interest in artisanal activities has gradually faded. This clearly poses a threat to deep-rooted traditions like that of the hammock. Even in the iconic hammock region of Yucatán, the tradition of sleeping in a handmade hammock is in decline. In the near future, it is possible that sleeping in hand-woven hammocks like our Queen Maya XXL “Guanajuato” will become a luxury, especially as the industrial hammock market grows, even in Mexico. A natural birthplace for Mayan women

For us city dwellers, the idea that a hammock could serve as a birthing table may seem improbable. However, for the vast majority of Mayan women or other indigenous communities, who for generations have been born, seen their family grow and even die in a hammock, this seems completely natural. Rural midwives, like pregnant women, consider giving birth in a hammock to be much more comfortable than in a bed. The main argument put forward is the adaptability of the hammock to the body of the pregnant woman; during childbirth, she can hold on to it to find the necessary strength. Additionally, getting in and out of a hammock is much easier for a pregnant woman than a bed. In addition, the hammock, in addition to being cooler, can be suspended at the desired height, thus offering optimal comfort. Did you know?

The Mexicans use a rather ingenious technique to take advantage of their hammock in case of intense heat: they place it in the freezer or soak it in cold water. This method, little known in Europe, offers instant relief and allows you to feel freshness instantly. However, it is important to note that this technique should not be used after prolonged exposure to the sun.
