How hammock workshops work in Nicaragua

Within each hammock workshop, a division of labor is set up, based on the specialization of each craftsman. The workshop owner assigns everyone a specific task to complete at each stage of the production process.

The seamstresses are responsible for weaving the fringes of the hammocks. They carry out this work sitting on a chair, outside their house, often in the company of other neighboring seamstresses. The weavers are responsible for weaving the body of the hammock on a loom. Although this is traditionally a man's job, some women sometimes take on this task. Finally, the assembler is responsible for assembling the different parts, including the fringes and the body of the hammock, as well as the bars, wooden decorations, ropes and rings. These are the three types of workers who make up the hammock workshop workforce.

Did you know?

On July 17 each year, the country celebrates a day full of joy "El Dia de la alegria" (the day of joy): the departure of the last member of the Somoza family. After 46 years of family dictatorship, he fled, taking with him the reserves of the National Bank. This special day is marked by bursting of firecrackers, singing of revolutionary songs and holding of political meetings. It is a moment of celebration where people express joy and relief, symbolizing the end of an era of oppressive power and hope for a better future.
